Spite mounds in Seattle, Washington, refer to the remnants of houses that were left standing on artificially created mounds during the Denny Hill regrade, which took place between 1906 and 1911. As the city sought to improve streets and infrastructure, many residents faced displacement through eminent domain, but some homeowners chose to resist selling their properties.

Those who fought against the city's plans found themselves isolated and cut off from essential resources and utilities after the surrounding land was altered. Consequently, they were left to dismantle their own homes, leading to the creation of these mounds as a testament to their tenacity and refusal to yield to city development.
